How To Uninstall MacPorts with Command Lines

What Is MacPorts? MacPorts, also called DarwinPorts, is a command line package management system that simplifies the installation of software on the macOS and Darwin operating systems. Similar with Homebrew, MacPorts is an open-source software project to simplify installation of other open source software. The official MacPorts GUI application is called Pallet and began as a Google Summer of Code project in 2009.

Why uninstalling MacPorts on Mac? Because uninstalling MacPorts is an irreversible process, you should understand it's not a universal troubleshooting solution for fixing unknown issues (How To Uninstall Programs on Mac). If you need to uninstall MacPorts (and it can run as normal), first uninstall all the installed ports by running this command in the Terminal:

$ sudo port -fp uninstall installed

This includes configuration files, databases, any files which MacPorts renamed in order to allow a forced installation or upgrade. Open Terminal and run the following commands to do so:

/Library/Receipts/DarwinPorts*.pkg \
/Library/Receipts/MacPorts*.pkg \

~/.macports
