Year: 2001

Apple announces the first iPod as a "breakthrough MP3 music player that packs up to 1,000 CD-quality songs." Apple CEO Steve Jobs promises that this new device will change the way we listen to music.

Year: 2002

Apple announces the second-generation of iPod during the New York Macworld Expo, slashing the price of the 5GB model down to $299. In addition, the company unveiled a "10GB model that is 10 percent thinner for just $399 (US); and a new 20GB model that can hold 4,000 songs for just $499 (US)."

Year: 2003

Apple unveils three new devices that make up the third-generation of iPod. The first complete redesign with all-touch interface, dock connector, 4-pin remote connector and slimmer case. Musicmatch support dropped with later release of iTunes 4.1 for Windows.

2003: Apple Releases iPod Silhouette Campaign

Year: 2004

Apple CEO Steve Jobs announces the new mini iPod during a keynote address at Macworld January 6, 2004 in San Francisco, CA. Jobs also announced other new products, including the new iLife 4 software.

Year: 2005

Apple unveils its first iPod for under $100 — the iPod Shuffle. Set to the sweet price off $99, the Shuffle is "smaller and lighter than a pack of gum" and holds up to 512MB of content (roughly 120 songs). Apple also released a 1GB model holding almost twice as many songs for only $50 more.

Year: 2006

The second-generation iPod nano is unveiled, featuring an anodized aluminum casing available in six colors, a design that hearkened back to the iPod mini. Alongside the new nano comes the second-generation iPod shuffle, which also gets a new anodized aluminum body, as well as a clip on the back.

Year: 2007

Steve Jobs delivers the keynote address at the Macworld Conference and announces three new products: "a widescreen iPod with touch controls," a "revolutionary mobile phone" and "a breakthrough Internet communicator." To uproarious applause, he reveals that these three products are actually a single device: the long-awaited and oft-rumored iPhone.


The new iPhone combines a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls and an internet communications device with the ability to use email, surf the web and navigate to a destination with maps.
